Feral Hog Management Workshop

The Bastrop County Soil and Water Conservation District is hosting a workshop on feral hog management Nov. 16 at the Rosanky Community Center, 135 Main St. in Rosanky.

Workshop instructors will discuss how feral hogs impact the local community and the state as well as go over laws and regulations landowners need to be aware of to control wild pig populations on their properties.

There are anywhere from 2.6 to 3 million feral hogs in Texas alone, causing more than 52 million dollars in damages every year, according to the Texas Department of Agriculture.

“The damage we’ve seen from wild hogs has increased exponentially over the past decade, ” said Camille Wiseman, an employee of the Soil and Water Conservation District. “Not only do wild hogs reduce the productivity of farm and ranch land and cause damage to equipment, but they also pollute our water bodies with sediment and bacteria and detrimentally impact our native wildlife populations through predation and habitat destruction.”

The workshop will have demonstrations on different trapping systems and strategies to reduce feral hog populations.

The cost to attend the workshop is $20. People interested in attending are asked to RSVP as space is limited and take cash or a check made out to Bastrop County Soil and Water Conservation District to the workshop. Participants may earn two Continuing Education Unit credits toward pesticide applicator’s licenses through Agri-Life.
